Hello. The car we are enjoying in today’s Legendary Moment is:
Alpina B10 4.0
BMW enthusiasts often end up in an M, or seek another sports car if that still isn't enough, yet curiosity about the hard-to-find Alpina remains difficult to satisfy in Korea. Its refined ride, sometimes paired with performance beyond an M, has earned a distinct following. There was once a Korean showroom, and newer Alpinas occasionally appear on the road. From tuner to manufacturer, Alpina now sits among the highest expressions of BMW-based cars and is registered with Germany's VDA as a production manufacturer (Group 1: cars/engines; Group 2: special bodies/buses; Group 3: tuning parts and so on). Today's E34-based B10 4.0 uses BMW's four-liter M60B40 V8 and is the junior V8 B10. Above it are the naturally aspirated V8 B10 4.6 and the six-cylinder twin-turbo B10 BiTurbo. If I had to name the last truly classic-looking 5 Series, it would be the E34. Perhaps this is what happens when you give an E34 its own stylist and personal trainer.

Alpina Blue Metallic, Alpina Classic wheels and the dedicated stripes are its signatures.

A production manufacturer that has spent decades tailoring the same base car into something with a different character and better performance.

Similar to an ordinary E34, yet different.

It can even look sportier than an E34 M5.

Despite its image of a tailored suit in a sophisticated city, it also suits a rough, abandoned building.

The rear also seems familiar, yet different.

That is, when compared with its base car, the BMW E34 540i.

It is now impossible to discuss Alpina without the blue, stripes and wheels.

A new suspension-and-spring combination developed by Alpina and Bilstein reconciles sporting ability with a luxurious ride.

The Alpina name appears throughout the car.

The restrained interior, enlivened by accents, conveys its completeness.

Colored stitching is another sign of careful finishing.

The instrument dials use a color that immediately identifies this as an Alpina.

The engine bay proudly declares its Alpina identity too. Mahle high-compression pistons, a revised intake manifold and remapped Bosch Motronic ECU add 29 hp and 10 Nm. Drive it, however, and the surprise goes beyond those numbers: performance comparable with a modern sedan.

Many Alpinas have already proved that the numbers on their speedometers are no empty promise.

There are signs of age, but the delicate finishes throughout seem to refine and develop what was missing from BMW's pursuit of driving pleasure alone at the time.

Alpina built its reputation through tuning parts and racing. The pattern recalling a checkered flag seems to express why—and how—it builds cars.

Alpina brings a production car to completion through refinement and craftsmanship.

It costs considerably more than an equivalent BMW, which brings many other cars into consideration. Even so, isn't this a manufacturer—and a car—worthy of being a dream? We will be here until your dream car appears on LEGENDARY100. Thank you.
