Mercedes-Benz has steadily introduced AMG versions across many model lines. The V12-powered 65 AMG models sit at the top of its performance range. The designation is largely reserved for the S, S Coupé (formerly CL), SL and G—in other words, large, expensive cars. Like the older twelve-cylinder 600, 63 AMG and 73 AMG engines, the newer biturbo V12 introduced in 2003 is physically large; achieving even a basic balance presumably demanded a larger vehicle. The SL65 AMG already had a clear identity as a high-performance roadster, but Mercedes began developing a version focused on track driving.
Its name: Black Series.

As the V8 Black Series models based on the SLK and CLK established their high-performance, limited-edition image, Mercedes chose the SL for the third Black Series—and the first with twelve cylinders. Replacing the hardtop convertible's Vario roof with a carbon roof demonstrated a commitment to less weight and a lower center of gravity.

The aggressive overfenders, which set enthusiasts' hearts racing at its unveiling, reveal the many measures considered for traction and function.

An active rear spoiler supports the lighter body and stability at high speed.

An ordinary SL with a body kit might appear to have a better stance. In person, though, you understand that this design serves function.

Despite the enormous overfenders, the front tires are not much larger than those of an ordinary rear-wheel-drive sports car.

Less flamboyant than the V8 AMG, certainly, but the V12 AMG's carbon engine cover is imposing.

Somehow, the craftsperson who assembled a Black Series engine seems a little more special.

The carbon bonnet feels genuinely light and distinctly carbon, unlike aftermarket parts. Its air vents are beautifully finished. There are no fake vents on this car.

The entrance feels relatively ordinary beside the exterior, yet remains faithful to the “Black” name.

Comfort and versatility mean you can enjoy it immediately, without modifications.

Mercedes' five-speed transmission is often described as durable but slow. This car differs from ordinary models through its dedicated AMG Speedshift Plus setup.

670 hp and 102.04 kgf·m. Roads feel too short and narrow to unleash all that power.

I hope you get to see this car in person.

Extraordinary performance and rarity notwithstanding, Mercedes' approach to building cars remains unmistakable even in the ultimate Black Series.
We will be here until your dream car appears on LEGENDARY100. Thank you.
