Design built on restoration

Buying a 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 fulfilled half of a dream I had carried for years. The next question was how I wanted to live with it. The car arrived in poor condition and underwent interior and exterior work, a full repaint and an engine overhaul. Bringing my own taste into that process turned the dream of ownership into a story I could help shape.

For the exterior, I chose a 901-style backdate. The aim was to bring the atmosphere of an early Porsche to the 1992 964, combining the classic appearance I liked with a car I wanted to drive. Restoration rebuilt its foundations; backdating gave a more definite shape to my own idea of a Porsche.

A signature inside the cabin

That approach continued inside. Checked fabric added a classic feel to the cabin. I wanted the impression from outside and the experience in the driver’s seat to feel connected. The exterior and interior became different expressions of the same personal taste.

I made the manual gear lever myself and added a gold-plated LEGENDARY logo. Putting my design into a part I touch while driving gave it a particular meaning. If the checked fabric set the atmosphere, the gear lever was a small signature within it. Those details gradually made the 964 my own.

Becoming part of Porsche’s story

While driving this personalised 964, I had the opportunity to appear with it in a Porsche owner-story advertisement made in Korea around the launch of the 992. The brand I had admired in magazines as a child now included my car and me in one of its stories. It was another step in that long-held dream.

That period is also recorded in Porsche’s official YouTube film, ‘911 Owner Stories Korea: Kim Taek and his 964 Carrera 4’. It offers a look at the car and its owner’s story before the later RWB chapter of HANGANG.

The next change: RWB

Looking back, this period matters as much as the transformation that followed. A tired 964 was restored, given a backdated appearance and personal cabin details, then became part of Porsche’s owner story. HANGANG’s history developed through successive choices and experiences.

Later, the wish to create something more individual—and to see a wider variety of classic Porsches in Korea—led to another decision. The next chapter will cover choosing RWB and the long wait through the pandemic. The build chapter will explain why HANGANG was Nakai’s first on-site build in Korea while officially becoming Korea’s second RWB.
