Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 4
The end of 993 production brought a new era for air-cooled Porsches. The distinctive 996, the switch to water cooling, and the Boxster and Cayenne broadened Porsche into a more mainstream, full-range manufacturer. Yet both the many water-cooled 911 and Boxster owners who arrived after the 996 and longtime devoted fans remember the air-cooled 911 fondly, with values rising each year. Today's 964 can be called the last classic Porsche offering a good foundation for conversion to the looks of the earlier G model (930) or the original 901 (called 901 in 1963 and 911 from 1964). This classic has evolved from a stock 964 to express its owner's individuality. It was LEGENDARY100's first review car and recently appeared in a Porsche Korea advertisement. Limited edition? Collectible? Value conferred by the manufacturer is only one part of a 911 world that has continued for more than fifty years.
There are dozens, even hundreds, of ways to enjoy a 911, and this car embodies its own approach. Its sky-blue paint turns heads everywhere, while the exterior recalls earlier models.
Isn't this exactly what “built to the owner's taste” means?
Fuchs wheel design is part of the 911's heritage, a living connection between generations.
Much seems changed, but unmistakable clues still reveal the 964 underneath.
In particular, the deck lid—the engine cover on a 911—sloping gently from the roof is a special Carrera charm.
I am sure that seeing it on the street would feel different again from looking at photographs.
In this picture, I sometimes catch glimpses of the Type 64 and 356.
Small details like these amplify the appeal of a classic 911. Beneath that charming classic color lies the rough beat of an air-cooled engine.
It is machinery in its raw form, beyond aesthetic judgment. Hear the exhaust and drive it, however, and even this becomes beautiful.
Opening the door brings a feeling as distinctive as the exterior. The checked interior catches the eye first.
Even the ignition, usually a cold-looking detail in a sports car, feels warmer through touches like these.
Full bucket seats have their advantages, but cannot match the convenience of the originals.
Perhaps staying together for a long time means gradually making something your own, like this.
