Hello. The car we are enjoying in today’s Legendary Moment is:
Porsche Boxster Spyder (981)
Porsche has given many cars the Spyder name. The 550 Spyder, which many regard as the original, was built in just 90 examples from 1953 to 1956. James Dean's short life ended in a 550 Spyder, leaving this rare racing car entwined with the legend of an icon of youth and rebellion. Today's Boxster Spyder (981) is the second generation, following the 2009 Boxster Spyder (987). With specifications not greatly different on paper from a Boxster S and a rather inconvenient roof, the 987 was sometimes dismissed amid Porsche's many special editions. The arrival of the 981 naturally established it as the first generation. To place the 981 clearly above the GTS, Porsche used the Carrera S's 3.8-liter engine, revising the crankcase, intake and other parts to create the MDB.XA engine (also identified as MA1.24 within the Boxster/Cayman family). Unlike the 987, a six-speed manual was the only transmission, adding to its character. If you haven't seen our video review yet, take a look.

Clearly distinct from ordinary 981s, the Spyder stands out even among the now-common Boxsters.

Lower and wider to the eye: it has every virtue this category calls for.

Ordinary models can imitate the shape, but cannot perfectly reproduce the function and quality of the original finished product.

The speedster humps offered as an option on the 986 evolved through the 987 Spyder into a fully integrated design. Even when you focus on the side mirror, the lines differ markedly from the base model.

Why do all those Spyder logos never seem like overstatement?

Porsche fans may complain about “PDK only,” but never “manual only.”

Sharing the 981's chrono placement is a little disappointing, but it preserves the clean, driver-focused dashboard.

The rollover bars, humps and bucket seats heighten the sense of occasion.

Those details give it far more distinctive lines than an ordinary Boxster. Can you see it?

Next time, we'll look at the third-generation 718 Spyder together.

“Only someone who has driven it can judge its value beyond the price paid. That is what makes a special model special.”
We will be here until your dream car appears on LEGENDARY100. Thank you.
